Description

1797 16 Stars Draped Bust Small Eagle Dime 1797 16 Stars Draped Bust Small Eagle Dime NGC Graded FINE Details Cleaned JR-1

This coin has moderate wear, charcoal grey surfaces and exceptional eye appeal for the grade.  The coin was lightly cleaned long ago, now retoned to its original splendor.  A few light hairlines and scratches are noted and mentioned for accuracy.  Attributed as JR-1 for the specialist concerned with die pairings.  A pleasing and very attractive example of this major rarity, seldom seen or offered at any price.

The entry into the Union of Tennessee in 1796 prompted the addition of a 16th star to those encircling Liberty, but it was quickly determined that this looked too crowded, and the decision was made to revert to 13 stars representing the original states. The obverse die used for JR-1 retained the 16-star configuration and made have been prepared the year before and left undated until needed.

It’s believed that the delivery of 9,099 dimes on May 26 comprised the entire production of JR-1, making it slightly the more common of two varieties for this date. Nevertheless, examples are scarce across all grades and genuinely rare in Mint State.
