The Mexican Mint, founded in 1535, holds the distinction of being the oldest mint operating in the Americas. Initially responsible for producing coinage for the western territories of the Spanish Empire, it now functions as Mexico’s official sovereign mint. Since 1981, the mint has been responsible for issuing the Mexican Libertad series, which serves as the nation’s official bullion coin program. At present, Alphaoreminers offers the 2013 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin.

2013 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin
The national coat of arms is the focus of the obverse design of coins in this series. Mexico’s coat of arms has undergone numerous transformations since independence, evolving from its Aztec origins of an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent to incorporate various political and cultural elements throughout different historical periods. The modern version, officially adopted in 1968, features a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus growing from a rock surrounded by water, with the bird grasping a rattlesnake in its beak and talons
All 2013 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are housed in protective plastic flips. In 2013, the Mexican Mint returned to issuing all five weight options in the Gold Libertad Series, including this 1 oz version. This followed the prior year’s decision to release only the 1 oz coin, making the 2013 release more in line with traditional production patterns.
2013 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin
The obverse of the 2013 Mexican Gold Libertad includes Mexico’s national coat of arms. The central image features a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus with a serpent in its beak, taken from a legendary Aztec origin story. This primary emblem is encircled by 10 earlier versions of the seal, including the 16th-century design found in the Codex Mendoza, which appears at the top of the array.
The reverse field of the 2013 1 oz Gold Libertad Coin includes Winged Victory looking over the Mexican capital. Behind her, the mountain peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl rise in the background, adding depth and historical context to the visual.
