The Austrian Mint introduced the 1 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic as the first coin in the series in 1989. It was issued alongside the 1/4 oz gold coin in that same year. The series expanded quickly in the early years. In 1991, a 1/10 oz gold coin was introduced and in 1994 a 1/2 oz gold coin was released. The last expansion of the series came 20 years later with the 2014 debut of a 1/25 oz gold coin. This was released for the 25th anniversary of the series and proved so popular the mint kept issuing it annually in the years that followed.

The obverse of 2022 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins comes with an image of the pipe organ inside the Musikverein. The pipe organ now installed in the Golden Concert Hall is the second during the lifetime of the building. The first was installed in 1872 and replaced by the existing pipe organ in 1907.

On the reverse side of 2022 1 oz Gold Philharmonic Coins is an image of musical instruments. The field includes a cello, two violins, a bassoon behind the cello, with a French horn and a harp behind the violins.
