The Royal Canadian Mint made its first additions to the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series in 1982. The first additions included the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coin. The mint would go on to add three more weights between 1986 and 2014, only once removing a coin. That was the 1/15 oz gold coin struck only in 1994 to mark the 15th anniversary.

It is also important to note the security features included in the design of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins. These 2020 Gold Maple Leaf Coins have radial lines in the background field on both the obverse and reverse, with a maple leaf privy on the reverse that includes the 20 digits from the date mark within the center.

On the reverse of 2020 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins is a depiction of the sugar maple leaf. A special emblem to the Canadian nation, it was first used to represent the early provinces and territories of Canada during the colonial era of the 17th and 18th centuries. This image was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Gold Maple Leaf.

The obverse of 2020 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin features the portrait of a 79-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 2003, this image appears on all bullion and circulation coinage from the Royal Canadian Mint. It is the first during her reign to show the Queen without a crown on her head.
