2021 Germania Mint 1-oz Silver Allegories — Germania & Austria Gem BU 2021 Germania Medal Honors Close Bond Between Germany And Austria

The Germania Mint’s latest release in its Allegories series featuring its namesake Germania — Germany’s female personification similar to our Liberty or Great Britain’s Britannia — is back with a gorgeous 2021 design. This new medal, just the fourth issue in the series, not only features a youthful and vibrant Germania, but it pairs her with Austria, the Republic of Austria’s female personification.

The Strong Bond Between Germany And Austria

This medal offers a new take on Austria, the Republic of Austria’s female personification. It mimics the famous sculpture of Austria that stands above the doorway of Vienna’s Commandant Building of the Arsenal built in the 1850s. Unlike the statue, however, the Austria on this medal is a younger version with a modern-leaning makeover. She is shown wearing a loose dress with a tight, scale-like boddice. Her lovely hair is a cascade of curls springing from the base of her opulent crown. Austria holds a spear in her left hand while the fingers of her left hand are interlaced with Germania’s. Both Germania and Austria are seated together in harmony. Like Austria, Germania is elegantly dressed in an understated bodice-style gown, her long, wavy hair flowing loose and free from laurel crown. In her right hand she firmly grasps her ever-present sword.

Austria and Germany have always shared a rich history. Often one and the same country dating back as far as the Holy Roman Empire, German is the language of both nations. They went their separate ways following the unification of Germany under the leadership of Prussia in 1867. Today, relations between the two nations are close, and both countries are part of the European Union, a membership that has allowed both countries to further consolidate their already strong link.
